What you need to know

  • It looks like Google has rolled back a new feature it recently added to the Authenticator app.
  • The app no longer requires you to click the hidden security code to reveal your 2FA code.
  • It has also received a slight improvement as part of the new Play Store update.

Google introduced a new feature for its Authenticator app back in May, allowing users to view their security code with a click. While the feature is harmless, it has been viewed as an unnecessary addition to the app, and now it seems Google has come to this realization.

As I spotted it 9to5Google (Opens in a new tab), the Google Authenticator app no longer shows a prompt asking you to tap to reveal your two-factor authentication code on the screen. Previously, it would hide all your security codes from instant view. This means that you can only see the 2FA combinations you need by clicking on a matching item. This prevented strangers from sinking your neck and stealing your security code for nefarious purposes.
