Here’s what I learned from riding an electric scooter

In an effort to cut carbon emissions, my city has seen the emergence of many bike lanes and an increasing number of gadgets squeezing them. There are a lot of new technologies for transportation, from electric bikes and scooters to electronic boards and unicycles with a futuristic look. I wanted to see what the electric vehicle (EV) craze is all about and decided to buy an entry-level e-scooter to ride to work during the summer. Was the trip as fun as it sounded? Here are five things I learned from riding an electric scooter for the first time.

It is easy to learn how to ride a scooter

For the uninitiated, it may seem difficult to catch up with all the electric vehicles on the road. Rest assured, though, that there are quite a few learning curves to riding an electric scooter. decided to get Gotrax GXL V2.0 ($348) because it was an affordable model that catered to first-time riders and had twice the range I needed to travel to the office and back home on a single charge.

When I finally arrived, the Gotrax GXL V2 was easy to assemble, and after a four-hour charge, it was even easier to ride. As a cyclist, I found a handbrake and a familiar bell to my left. On my right, the tempting thumb choke I kept longing to squeeze. My first test was around the desks in our open office (which probably forced a few of my colleagues to wear their noise-canceling headphones), and then I took it outside for a real road test.

After a few days, I felt like I had mastered the basics of riding an electric scooter. And after a few weeks of commuting, the fun factor is still far from gone.

With one foot planted on the scooter and the other off the ground, all it took was a simple turn of the throttle to pick up speed and maintain balance. As for deceleration, I found the brakes on this model to be a bit inconsistent, sometimes slow to stop and other times very abrupt. The faster you braking, the faster it wears out and needs maintenance.

Turning is easy enough, especially if you can handle a wide radius. However, you can’t really signal your turns because you need both hands on the handlebars, although some modern quality scooters have added turn signals for this reason.

Invest in practical features

The first thing I felt when riding the Gotrax was every bump and break on the road. One feature my e-bike didn’t have was the suspension, and my knees would definitely have appreciated some support. Even if your commute is basically flat pavement, I recommend investing in suspension or thicker tires to roll any street surprises smoothly.

The second thing I’ve noticed is the speed reduction for minor inclines. The 250W motor would struggle to climb any hills, and it took a few thrust kicks to help propel me up. Hills will drain the battery faster, reducing the maximum range. Look for a 350W or even 500W motor if you want to travel longer distances or over steep terrain.

While the scooter is fun in the sun, I wouldn’t expect to use it in most other West Coast seasons because it’s not waterproof. As soon as it started raining, it quickly became slippery under the wheels. There is also a concern that any spatter could damage electrical components. If you live somewhere wet, look for a model with an IP rating of at least five but preferably six (IP5X or IP 6X) for protection from the elements.

Finally, there is the portability factor. While the Gotrax GXL V2 weighs only about 25 pounds, the foldable clamp (or lack thereof) made it difficult to carry. The plastic latch did not pass the vibration test and would fly open unexpectedly. If you plan to carry your scooter on the move or across public places, follow my advice and invest in one with a lock strong enough to keep the scooter folded, such as Gutrax G4.

Legitimacy is a gray area

At first, I wasn’t sure about the speed limits, and it seems most municipalities don’t know what to set either. My city is in the middle of a three-year pilot program for electric scooters, threatening tickets to anyone moving faster than 25 km/h on the roads. However, that doesn’t stop some riders from doubling up on the higher-end models. Most budget-friendly options, though, will have a motor limited to around 25 km/h, which would make them mistaken on the safe side of the regulations.

Research your city’s laws before you hit the trigger for a purchase.

There was also the question of where I was allowed to ride my e-bike. For example, I was looking forward to riding along the seawall of Stanley Park, only to discover that it is limited to bikes and pedestrians.

Finally, certain regions have different regulations for nighttime riding. If you plan to drive around after dark, get a scooter with a good headlight and reflectors. While most e-scooters have a headlight, you will usually find reflective stickers that can wear out over time. For extra safety, some helmets It now has LED lights for increased visibility.

It’s faster and more fun than crossing

I used to take the bus everywhere, but now I won’t be back unless I have to. Feeling the breeze as I cross the bridge into the heart of downtown, the quiet satisfaction of cars stuck in traffic never gets old.

I find that I am constantly testing the distances I can travel and the errands I can run while riding my bike.

The electric scooter is perfect for quick commuting so you have plenty to carry around. Riding while wearing a backpack is not a problem, but if you need more space for cargo, you might consider getting a bag attachment For hanging front handlebars. If the storage space is still not enough, there is always the option of getting an electric bike. While it is pricey, you can carry a heavier load on the front and rear of your bike.

Leave me wanting more

While the Gotrax was a fun and safe introduction to the world of electric scooters, it left me craving for more. Having already tested a couple of other models, I can say that it is worth paying the extra for some of the high-end features. Specifically, look for suspended or thicker tires for a smoother ride, a secure folding clamp, and better water resistance. The fewer plastic components, the longer the scooter will last.

After a week of riding, I became confident that I could handle more speed and power. One of the frustrating things was not being able to overtake cyclists or slow scooters in the bike lane. And the inability to accelerate also made me feel unsafe to get out of the way of traffic at any moment.
