Internet connections can sometimes be a bit tricky, and it can be hard to tell if the problem is on your end, or if there is something to do with the connection itself. In such situations, ping tests can help determine if you are connected to the Internet and how stable your connection is. Here’s how to ping Windows.

What is a ping test?

Ping is a measure of network latency. Measured in milliseconds, it’s the time it takes a piece of data, usually 32 or 64 bytes, to move from one computer to another and back. A ping test is a test for testing computer connectivity at an address using the associated IP address or domain name. A ping test can be a quick and easy way to check connectivity and connection stability.

In Windows, the ping also displays additional information about the connection such as packet loss, minimum, maximum, and average ping time. These stats can also help give some additional context as to why you are experiencing network problems.

A Windows ping will return the results with some stats. Here are the important parts of the output.

  • data volume: ping specifies how much data is being pinged, usually 32 bytes.
  • time: This number refers to the ping itself, and is measured in milliseconds – for example, 13 milliseconds, as shown in the screenshot above.
  • TTL: This is the time to stay, which tracks the path of a data packet while its connection is being tested. It reports how many jumps he can make before he is eliminated. The maximum value is 128. The value displayed by CMD is the number of hops left.
  • Packages sent and received: This is the number of times the data is compressed, usually four, called packets sent and received. The numbers for both should be the same for a successful test, a lower number received indicates connection problems, zero indicates a connection loss. Loss represents the number of packets lost, with a percentage number that goes along with it.
  • ping stat numbers: minimum Shows the best ping number, Maximum The worst ping number appears, and Average It shows the average ping number, which we generally consider to be the main result of the ping test.

a transmission failed, or The request has expired A message will indicate that the ping failed. It could mean either that your connection has problems or that the address you are trying to ping is not available.
