Asus Zenfone 9 SlashLeaks 1

The past few weeks have seen a variety of details about the phone come to light. So here’s everything we know so far and what we hope to see when the Zenfone 9 finally arrives.

Will there be an Asus Zenfone 9?

Zenfone is a long-running series of phones, so it should come as no surprise that the company revealed that the compact Zenfone 9 is coming. What’s not clear at this point is whether we’ll see another pop-up camera difference like the Zenfone 8 Flip, if Asus will return to the Pro title standings, or if there’s only one model this time around.

When will the launch date of Asus Zenfone 9?

Asus has confirmed that the Zenfone 9 will be revealed on July 28 at 9AM ET. So how does this launch window compare to previous phones? Well, you can take a look at the previous launch dates below.

  • Asus Zenfone 6-16 May 2019
  • Asus Zenfone 7 – August 26, 2020
  • Asus Zenfone 8-13 May 2021

The big question is whether the Zenfone 9 will be available for purchase soon after its launch. This was usually an issue with the Zenfone series.

What we thought: Asus Zenfone 8 Review

What features will the Asus Zenfone 9 have?

No word on a Flip model this year, but we do have a lot of information regarding the standard Zenfone 9 thanks to a leaked promotional video. You can check out all the reported features below.

according to early rumor Based on a graphic spotted in the Zenfone 8 Flip’s Android 12 update, the expectation is that the phone will retain the Zenfone 8’s dual rear camera setup. This looks like a 50MP main and 12MP ultrawide setup, which will be slightly different from last year’s specs. .

The leaked promotional video already matches the aforementioned graphic, and shows a phone with the same compact design and dual rear camera setup. The video confirms up to an IP68 rating and a 3.5mm port. The Asus segment indicates that the side-mounted fingerprint scanner can be swiped to scroll through pages. Check out some screenshots below.

Not convincing makes concept We suggest that the Flip triple camera module release may also return this year, but we won’t be putting any stock on this as a confirmation. The design of the phone is still up in the air at this point, as is its actual existence.

The promotional video mentioned above gives us a lot of information regarding the features as well. For example, we have a 5.9-inch OLED display with a frequency of 120 Hz, a 4,300 mAh battery, a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, and a side fingerprint scanner.

We also have the camera details, which is the 50MP IMX766 main camera with “gimbal stabilization”. There’s no word on the secondary rear camera, but we’re guessing it’s a 12MP ultrawide camera.

One of the talking points previously rumored about with the Zenfone 9 was the introduction of a back tap gesture like the one available on the Google Pixel 6. It looks like this would be a double tap gesture, but we’re not sure what it does or if it could be planned at this point.

There isn’t any info about other details like the selfie camera or charging speed, so we’ll just need to wait for the launch to learn more about these features.

What will be the price of the Asus Zenfone 8?

Last year’s Asus Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip were reasonably priced, and the series has historically been more on the affordable side of the market. Here’s how the series stacks up historically:

  • Asus Zenfone 7 – €699 (~$830)
  • Asus Zenfone 7 Pro – from €799 (~$950)
  • Asus Zenfone 8 – from $629
  • Asus Zenfone 8 Flip – from €799 (~$970)

Asus phones sat quite happily without the premium players in the market. As such, we can probably expect the price of the ballpark to be in the same area, although extras such as installing a gimbal may see a small change in price.

Asus Zenfone 9: What we want to see

The Asus Zenfone 8 series is getting a little under the radar in 2020, but the Zenfone 8 is making a name for itself as one of the best small phones of 2021. The Zenfone 8 Flip wasn’t bad either, but it was more of a frequent upgrade over the Zenfone 7 series. With that said, there’s plenty of room To improve either way, so here’s what we want to see from the Zenfone 9 series in 2022.

Faster and wider version on the market

One of the most annoying things about the Zenfone 8 lineup is the scattered availability. The benchmark Zenfone 8 landed in the US a few weeks after its launch, but the Flip variant has completely overtaken the US. The phone is also available in Europe and the UK, but the Indian version has been delayed by several months. In fact, the Indian version was finally launched in February 2022.

So we would really like to see Zenfone 9 hit the market soon across the board. After all, Zenfone 8 was launched in India when the new generation of flagship phones was already available. Moreover, wide availability would also be great.

Keep Zenfone 9 price the same or go down a bit

The best thing about the Zenfone 8, aside from its size, is the price, which comes in at just $629. That was a great price for a waterproof flagship phone, making it only slightly more expensive than the aggressively priced Pixel 6, but it’s pretty big.

Asus should maintain this price with the Zenfone 9, as it was initially well priced. We wouldn’t argue against a slightly lower price tag if the new phone was just a frequent upgrade, but it looks like the device will be a more significant version.

As for the Zenfone 8 Flip, it started at €799 (~$913). We can understand a somewhat higher price tag due to the more sophisticated design and additions such as the telephoto camera and the larger battery. But the standard Zenfone still offers exclusive features like better Gorilla Glass, a higher refresh rate, a headphone jack, and water resistance. So the lower price would be welcome for the Flip as well unless it receives some major upgrade.

Bring wireless charging

One notable distinguishing feature missing from the Zenfone 8 phones was wireless charging, which has become a staple of premium-priced devices over the years. This absence has been particularly stark on the Zenfone 8 Flip given its price, so hopefully we’ll see the Zenfone 9 get at least Qi charging.

We understand why the feature is missing out on the standard Zenfone, given its small size and the space that wireless charging components inside the phone can take up. However, the iPhone SE 2022 and Pixel 6 combined have them, so it would be nice if Asus could offer it with the Zenfone 9. Having said that, there has been no mention of wireless charging for the Zenfone 9 yet.

At least three years of operating system updates

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

Asus isn’t bad for software updates, as it was fairly active with the release of Android 12. Having said that, there’s a lot of room for improvement beyond the standard two years of OS updates. After all, the industry has changed dramatically in the past couple of years when it comes to software support.

We’ve since seen the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Nokia, and OnePlus all offer three or more years of OS updates in some capacity. Some of these policies seem to be more PR-related than others, and therefore focus only on a select few devices. We’d love to see Asus step up and commit at least three years of OS upgrades to the Zenfone 9 family (and retroactively to the Zenfone 8 series too!).

We’re not so sure that will happen, as the more expensive Asus ROG Phone 6 is still stuck in two years of OS updates and just two years of security patches. This is a real shame.

improve cameras

The Zenfone 8 series hasn’t been a leader in its class when it comes to photography. More specifically, we thought the Zenfone 8 (which has a 64MP main lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens) took good but not excellent photos via the main shooter. We also thought the ultrawide camera was a disappointment.

Our impressions of the Flip couldn’t have been better, save for the presence of the 8MP 3x telephoto camera. We’d ideally like to see the telephoto camera arrive on the standard phone as well, but leaked promotional materials suggest that doesn’t happen.

At least, though, we’d like to see Asus improve the quality of the main and ultrawide picture on both phones. Whether it’s through better imaging algorithms, taking advantage of the latest imaging technologies from Qualcomm, or introducing better hardware (such as better sensors and OIS). Fortunately, the standard phone comes with gimbal stabilization technology, which indicates that recorded videos should be smoother.

Keep the headphone jack and IP68 rating

Correct profile Asus Zenfone 8

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

Two main features Asus have added to the Zenfone 8 are the headphone jack and the IP68 rating, with the former being rare in flagships these days and the latter uncommon at the roughly $600 price point.

The company should take an “if it ain’t broke” approach to these two features, keeping them both on the Zenfone 9. That seems to be the case indeed according to the promotional materials. We also welcome the return of the headphone jack in the Flip version.

It may be difficult or impossible to achieve an IP68 rating on the Zenfone 9 Flip, but splash resistance would be a welcome addition nonetheless. After all, if Samsung could bring water resistance to foldable devices, you’d think some form of IP rating would be possible on the Zenfone 9 Flip even with the impressive rotating camera.

What would you like to see from the Zenfone 9 series?
