🙌 Good day everyone, and welcome to the Power Daily. It’s week 28 and day 192 of 2022. It’s gone this year, right?

It’s time for a C-tier pixel

In a hurry this week, Google’s latest round of smartphone launches is getting closer. The company may already offer a budget ‘A’ variant of its Pixel series of smartphones, but it’s still out of reach of billions of potential users. Isn’t it time for the company to consider a cheaper device? It’s a theory my colleague Calvin Wankede researched over the weekend.

Why 2022 is the year of the pixel budget

  • Google has always dealt with the emerging markets of the world, such as Nigeria, Indonesia, Mexico, etc.
  • While Android and other software platforms are compatible with this drive, its hardware offerings are still far from a step.
  • Sure, Google previously offered Pixel models as low as $349, but it has offered cheaper devices under other umbrellas, like Motorola, in the past.
  • There is plenty of evidence to suggest that another crack in a real economy phone in 2022 will revitalize Google’s suite of devices.

formula for success

  • So what could a Pixel budget include?
  • Given the price constraints, Google may ditch its Tensor chips in favor of cheaper silicon.
  • Google could make more savings for users with older designs from the likes of the Pixel 4a, similar to the iPhone SE.
  • Google’s strength lies in the software, so expect an easy and fast Android experience with the latest features and regular updates.
  • A rear fingerprint sensor, smaller screen, and an older but competent Pixel camera system could be a compelling device under $300.

do not hold your breath

  • As much as a budget Pixel might impress, don’t expect Google to offer one.
  • The Pixel 6a is due to be released in a few weeks, and it will start at $449.
  • This is still well above the budget area.
  • Although Google looks to emerging markets for growth, it still sells its products in a narrow range of countries.
  • It’ll need to improve its distribution efforts to ship the budget Pixel, and that’s something you can barely muster with the flagship Pixel series.
  • It would also be difficult to oust the likes of Xiaomi, Realme, and even OnePlus in the budget segment.
  • With that said, we’d like Google to surprise us all.
